Generation of photon pairs in a long optical fiber - a simple possibility to observe the weak quantum effect of zero-point fluctuations of optical modes.
Abstract. A nonlinear quantum-optical process is considered - the emission of photon pairs by the reflecting end of a fiber excited by a standing laser wave. The radiation arises due to a periodic change in time of the optical length of the fiber. Small losses in the fiber make it possible to significantly enhance this radiation in long fiber. Because of this enhancement, a nonperturbative description of the process is required. Such a description presented here predicts a) strong increase in radiation if the amplitude of oscillations of the optical length coincides with the laser wavelength and b) optimal energy (typically ~µW) of the laser beam. The considered phenomenon can be used to make a source of entangled photons.
