Laboratory of Sensor Technologies
The research of the lab is focussed on the development of new gas sensing nanomaterials and sensing methods. Different materials, structures, and prototypes are designed and investigated.
· We are designing highly sensitive 2D structures by functionalising single-layer graphene via pulsed laser deposition of minute amounts of dopants. Different 2D materials are being pursued with a goal to develop low-power air quality sensors and electronic noses.
· Nano-structured oxide materials doped with rare earth ions have, in addition to the electronic response, the photoluminescence response, which offers new possibilities for fundamental studies of sensing mechanisms and provides increased functionality for applications.
· We are studying and modelling underlying sensing mechanisms, in particular, photo-induced processes, with a goal of increasing sensitivity, selectivity and stability of sensors.
· Novel detection techniques with multi-frequency modulation are also developed in the group for optical sensing. Fast detection of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in water is demonstrated.
